George W. Kline began working for Howell & Pierson Inc. in 1918, doing wagon & buggy repair. The automobile changed the business and the company began selling Hudson & Terraplane.
Main Motorcar’s current location (224 West Main Street) started out as a Baptist Church. The showroom is part of the original church. Through the years, George bought neighboring houses as they came up for sale, to make more room for the dealership.
In 1936, Howell and Pierson became a Dodge dealership. In the 1950′s George started a second Dodge store in Gloversville (H&P Motors), which he sold to Nunzio Isabella, his son-in-law. In 1964 George passed away and his son Richard X. Kline took over the family business.
Richard expanded the size of the dealership property, and increased sales, increased the service and repair departments. In 1985 Howell & Pierson formally became Johnstown Dodge to more easily define what they were to the market. Dick’s son George Kline Took over the business in 1995, and has expaned the building and parking areas throughout the entire downtown block.
H&P Motors continued to expand in Gloversville with a large presence on Main St and across the street. Nunzio Isabella was named Time Magazine’s New Car Dealer of the Year. A distinct honor indeed. H&P Motors Service, under the direction of John Isabella and Tim Runkle, was named “Best Auto Service” by the Leader Herald’s readers in 2009.
In 2008, the recession but the automobile business in turmoil. Alex Isabella and George Kline looked at the market and felt that they could serve their customers better if they put the best of the both dealerships together. The two dealerships once again became one for the first time in 55 years. Jeep dealership was added to the lineup of brands being sold, along with Dodge Ram Commercial Trucks and Vans.
The new dealership is called Main Motorcar. After all we are the Main source for great cars & trucks. The Main place for professional auto service. The best in the country! And we were both on Main Street.
We are located in Fulton County. We support our local communities and we been doing it for 95 years!
